Hi there! Duolit is on hiatus, but please feel free to explore our extensive archive of posts and our free Weekend Book Marketing Makeover. Thanks for visiting!

Live a little, write a lot: get your NaNoWriMo swag!

First off, congratulations to “Live a little, write a lot,” the winner of last week’s poll and Duolit’s Offical 2011 NaNoWriMo slogan! Thanks to Sadey for creating this slogan for us. For her contribution, Sadey has also become an honorary yearly Indie Ninja (we’ll give you a shout about that soon, Sadey)!

Today, on NaNoWriMo Eve, we’d like to show you some swag we’ve created to keep you inspired all month long, all featuring this year’s slogan. Check out our new CafePress store for shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, stickers, journals and more! We created four unique designs from which to choose:

We’re so proud to unveil these products to you guys, and we hope they offer a bit of NaNoWriMo inspiration. Be sure to get lots of sleep tonight (after the candy high wears off), because tomorrow is the big day. We can’t wait to check out your NaNoWriMo projects!

Choose Our NaNoWriMo Slogan! [Poll]

Update: The poll is now closed. Congratulations to “Live a little, write a lot,” the winner and Duolit’s 2011 NaNoWriMo slogan! Thanks to Sadey for creating this slogan for us — she’s also become an honorary yearly Indie Ninja!

Back at the beginning of the month, we asked our awesome readers to come up with a creative slogan to be Duolit’s theme for this year’s NaNoWriMo. Boy, did you guys come through! We got a bunch of amazing entries and want to extend a sincere “thank you” to everyone who submitted a slogan.

Alas, however, there can only be one winner. After intense deliberations over s’mores at our meeting last night, Shannon and I chose three slogans to be in contention for the big prize. Your options:

Voting will remain open until 6pm ET on October 28th. We’ll announce the winner (as well as introduce some cool NaNoWriMo swag featuring the winning slogan) on Halloween, October 31st!

Support Us, Reward Yourself: Be An Indie Ninja!

Contrary to what your imaginations (and ours) might have been conjuring up for the last few months, Toni and I haven’t shirked our Duolit responsibilities to spend more time at the beach. We are just as pale as ever and believe it or not, we really miss you guys. Lately, we’ve just been spread thin (yes, we know it’s not the first time we’ve used that excuse).

But this time is going to be different because we have analyzed the two biggest problems for our Duolit community as a whole and come up with a mutually beneficial solution: Indie Ninjas.

Problem #1: The self-publishing industry is esoteric at best, frustrating at worst.

We created Duolit to provide indie authors worldwide with guidance, advice and an assortment of services to make the self-publishing process an easier and more successful experience. Since the company’s inception, we’ve been awed by the sheer size of the indie writing community and thankful for the appreciation its members have shown us.

We love sharing our knowledge with you guys and the thing is, we have so much more to give. These lapses in new content are unacceptable to us. We want to be a consistent and steady source of support while also providing a growing resource of tools, tips and tricks for finding indie success.Continue Reading

Fireworks in celebration of our first character generator!

As Shannon mentioned in her previous Character Cavalcade Week posts, we have a very special announcement to make in honor of this week’s celebration of characters. She couldn’t decide whether actual fireworks would crash the interwebs (or burn down her apartment), so instead I chose a fireworks photo. This way, we’re safe! Let the celebration begin!

End Your Character Plights! Break Through a Block! Assemble a Cast!

After days of staring at code until my eyes crossed, I’m honored to announce the grand opening of the first tool in a series that we’re very excited about here at Duolit: the YA Character Generator!

This dynamic tool will give you an extra creative push to tackle that upcoming prompt, short story, poem, or novel, generating the information needed to create exciting, multi-faceted and inherently interesting characters. Continue Reading
